Hantaviruses are zoonotic viruses naturally carried by rodents. Human infection is uncommon, but disease can be severe and varies by virus and region.

In the Americas, infection can lead to hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome. In Europe and Asia, orthohantaviruses are more often associated with haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.
